A Salon working to full capacity every day consumes water and electricity and produces a lot of waste. A few simple rules can considerably reduce its environmental impact, improving the prospects of all the Earth's inhabitants for a better life, today and tomorrow.

  • 1. USE RENEWABLE ENERGY

    On average, you save 600g (21 oz.) of CO2 per KW of electricity consumed when you use renewable energy, as opposed to energy deriving from fossil fuels. Contact your local utility company for more information.

  • 2. USE LOW-ENERGY LIGHTING

    Choose light bulbs marked CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lights). They last 10 times longer and use 66% less energy than incandescent bulbs.

  • 3. REMEMBER TO CLEAN YOUR SALON'S WINDOWS

    Make the most of the natural light and reduce your electricity bill to a minimum by keeping the salon’s windows clean. The natural light is ideal for reading your client’s colour.

  • 4. INVEST IN SOLAR PANELS

    If possible, install solar panels to produce your own energy.

  • 5. INSTALL AUTOMATIC HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEMS

    By setting the thermostat just 2°C (4°F) lower in winter and regulating for a temperature 2°C higher in summer, a salon can reduce its CO2 emissions by 499 kg (1,100 lb) annually. When you set the thermostat, think of the environment.

    Equip your salon with recycling bins for paper, plastics, glass, hair-colouring tubes and foils for meches.

  • 7. DON’T USE THROW-AWAY ITEMS

    Buying items made to last is one of the simplest ways of cutting down on waste and saving the energy required to dispose of them.

  • 8. ENCOURAGE THE REFILL

    Encourage reusing bottles from shampoo and other retail products with special refill programmes.

  • 9. OFFER RECYCLING DISCOUNTS

    For example, for every container brought back to the salon apply a discount to your client’s next product purchase.

  • 10. TAKE PART TO ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

    Look into organizations that allow you to donate hair for environmental clean-up projects.

  • 11. CREATE A SUSTAINABLE DECORATED SALON

    If possible, consider using as many recycled or repurposed materials as possible for furniture and decor, especially if you can support local companies.

  • 12. REUSE GLOVES

    Use gloves as many times as possible before disposing of them.

  • 13. PROMOTE PRODUCT LARGER SIZES

    Recommend to your clients purchasing 1000ml products to refill smaller sizes.

  • 14. SAVE WATER

    Always turn off the tap when massaging in products during a hair wash and have a flow reducer fitted to the tap: this is an inexpensive device that can reduce your water bill by 50%.

  • 15. INVEST IN WATER PURIFICATION SYSTEMS

    Instead of offering clients bottled water – and adding to the already enormous amount of plastic being recycled daily – invest in a water purification system that connects directly the pipes under your salon’s kitchen sink and purifies tap water. There are numerous companies that offer these systems, from very basic designs to more elaborate models.

  • 16. WASH LINENS IN COLD WATER

    Using your washing machine’s cold-water program avoids producing large quantities of CO2 (and your linens come out just as clean).

  • 17. LEARN ABOUT NEW TECHNOLOGIES

    Low consumption flush toilets, dual flush systems, tap aerators and high energy-efficiency washing machines and dishwashers are all ways to save water.

  • 18. PROMOTE THE REUSE OF YOUR SHOPPING BAGS

    Invite clients to reuse your shopping bags, offering a discount on future purchases if they return with the same bag.

  • 19. SAY GOODBYE TO PAPER

    You don't need paper invitations and flayers: just use email and social media.

  • 20. PRODUCE OXYGEN

    Feature some potted plants in your salon (possibly using recycled Essential Haircare containers as vases). The oxygen produced by green plants helps to balance out carbon dioxide emissions and they will make your salon more attractive.

  • 21. GET CLOSER TO NATURE

    With just a little space (indoors and outdoors) you can create an organic herb garden. Use the herbs to make your own teas or herbal water for your clients.

    If you have the access, a roof garden will provide natural insulation for your salon and a great source of herbs and vegetables for your clients and staff. Remember to opt for local and resistant plants which need little water. When they need watering, do it in the evening to limit evaporation.

    Study the labels on the detergents you are thinking of buying, and choose the most environmentally friendly ones. This will reduce water pollution.

  • 24. FIX LEAKING TAPS

    A leaking tap can waste 20 gallons of water a day.Simple plumbing maintenance is probably the cheapest and easiest way to save money.

  • 25. ONLY USE YOUR WASHING MACHINE WHEN IS FULL

    Wait until your washing machine is full with towels and other linens before you run it. This is a simple way to conserve both energy and water.
